Avoid Mistakes: The Correct Way to Fill Out Your Islamic Marriage Contract

If you have a blank Nikah Nama form and need help filling it out correctly, this guide will walk you through the process.

1. Understanding the Nikah Nama

The Nikah Nama typically includes:

  • Personal details of the bride and groom
  • Consent declarations (Ijab-o-Qubool)
  • Mahr (dower) details
  • Witnesses’ information
  • Terms and conditions (if any)
  • Signatures and official registration

2. Step-by-Step Filling Process

A. Bride and Groom’s Details

Fill in the following information:

  • Full names (as per national ID)
  • Father’s/Husband’s name (for bride, usually father’s name)
  • Age and date of birth
  • Addresses (current and permanent)
  • CNIC/NIC/copyright numbers (for legal validity)

B. Mahr (Dower) Details

  • Prompt Mahr (Mu’ajjal) – Amount payable immediately.
  • Deferred Mahr (Mu’wajjal) – Amount payable later (e.g., in case of divorce or death).
  • Specify currency (e.g., PKR, USD, gold equivalent).

C. Consent of the Bride & Groom (Ijab-o-Qubool)

  • The Wali (guardian) or bride must verbally accept the proposal.
  • The groom must verbally accept the marriage.
  • This is recorded in the Nikah Nama as:
    • "I, [Groom’s Name], accept [Bride’s Name] as my wife with the agreed Mahr."
    • "I, [Bride’s Name/Wali’s Name], give myself/[Bride’s Name] in marriage to [Groom’s Name]."

D. Witnesses’ Information

  • Two adult Muslim male witnesses (or according to your school of thought).
  • Their full names, father’s names, addresses, and CNIC numbers must be written.

E. Terms & Conditions (Optional but Recommended)

  • Any special conditions (e.g., wife’s right to work, divorce clauses).
  • Must be agreed upon by both parties before signing.

F. Signatures & Registration

  • Bride, groom, Wali, and witnesses must sign.
  • Nikah Registrar (Qazi/Maulvi) signs and stamps for legal validity.
  • Court/Union Council registration (if required by law).

3. Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Incomplete personal details (CNIC, addresses missing).
❌ Unclear Mahr amount (must be specified in numbers & words).
❌ Missing witness details (invalidates Nikah in some cases).
❌ No Wali consent (required in most Sunni schools).

4. Legal Validity & Next Steps

  • For Sharia compliance, the Nikah is valid once signed by witnesses.
  • For legal recognition, submit to the local marriage registrar (e.g., Union Council in Pakistan, Court in India).
  • Keep multiple copies (for bride, groom, and records).
